The 2013 Eels

The Daily Photo

The 2013 Eels side were a decent team and went all the way to the Dunedin club final which they ended up loosing to Dunedin. That year their Premier 2 side won their competition which shows how much depth the club during these years.

Reasons To Smile

The Daily Photo

The popularity of 1st XV and Colts rugby has grown a lot over the last few years throughout New Zealand, however on the flip side there’s a significant drop off of players leaving the game at High School or once become ineligible for the Colts grades. In Dunedin, the 2016 Colts champs were University Blue after they beat Alhambra Union in a close final that went right down to the final minute. No wonder Captain Sam Pene was smiling at the end after getting his hands on the trophy.

The Noah Cooper Profile

The Daily Photo

While he was studying in Dunedin, Noah Cooper became a familiar sight in the AU side at the North Ground. If I’m correct, he spent most of his time at fullback, however occasional he floated further in if injuries hit like here when he was playing first five. A few seasons back, usually you’d find Peter Breen running the AU backline from first five but that’s changed somewhat now with both having headed up north.

The Winter Solstice

Bring On The Weekend

0306170932It’s that time of year when I expect the weather to be bad on the weekends. The period of late June through to early August can often bring in all sorts of unsettled weather to Dunedin and the surrounding areas. It’s also the time of year when there’s the least amount of daylight hours because of the winter solstice . At present, the sun is setting at 5;00pm meaning after 3:30/4:00pm the daylight can be a bright golden glow as it sinks low on the horizon but it also means lots of long shadows and low light conditions in some of the grounds that are tucked away behind hills. Generally, from now till the end of the club season, I’m pushing my ISO higher than I would have been in mid May and carrying more wet weather gear with me. It’s also when the grounds are becoming muddy, giving images a different dimension and a real winter sport feel.

Lets hope for clear skies and muddy paddocks!

The Daily Photo

I initially thought that this might have been Charlie O’Connell’s last dance in Dunedin Premier club rugby. I took it after the Taieri Eels won the banner in 2014 however then I recalled an image of him charging down the touchline at Forsyth Barr Stadium in the 2015 final against University A (you can see it here).

The Owaka Weekly

On Saturday we ..

I must admit I quite like reading the Owaka RFC match reviews that they post of their Facebook page. They’re written with honesty, passion and loyalty that I find myself intrigued to catch up on their weekly update. If you want to read and follow a club that seems to battle to get players to training, to field 15 players each week and does there best to compete at the grassroots, check them out. Owaka RFC on Facebook

Dedication and Commitment

The Ton

It was interesting to read last week about Kaikorai back Danny van der Voort bringing up the milestone of 100 games on Saturday.  No matter where you live, to play 100 games for your club takes a high level of dedication and commitment so it should be celebrated, which I’m sure it was. If you’ve got a player or person you want mentioned then flick me a message to [email protected]
