In persistent rain and cold temperatures yesterday, the South Island Premier Rugby League Competition kicked off for 2019. This year’s competition includes Canterbury Maori, Otago Whalers, Southland Rams, West Coast Chargers and the Aoraki Eels competing for the title.
The Otago Whalers were victorious in their opening match of the South Island Rugby League competition with a 48 to 10 win over Canterbury Maori. The match was played in wet and slippery conditions at the Kensington Oval yesterday afternoon with Otago scoring three quick tries to start the match and forcing Canterbury Maori to play under pressure for most of the match.
