Seagull and Beach at Dusk

St Kilda

The local beaches here in Dunedin really do seem to get the best and worst of the weather systems that hit the New Zealand coastline. On a fine, clear, warm evening there can be no better place to be as the sun drops from view and the twilight hours take hold. However, when I southernly storm front travels up the coastline bring wind, snow, hail, freezing temperatures and massive swells it’s the last place you’d want to be. This was one of those evenings when time seemed to stand still until the occasional cry from a circling seagull seemed to suggest that it was time to move on.

So this is me at the moment: I’m really enjoying exploring images that represent a place and time and hint at a human presence at the moment. Personally, I think that by capturing representations of human life that show the passing of time, it gives me a stronger inner connection to my own memories but it also allows me to connect and make sense of the world around me.

Western Marine Reserve

Kapiti Island

When we were over on Kapiti Island we spent a whole day exploring all the walking tracks on the northern end of the Island and being followed by all the Kaka. While we were their we trekked up the  5 km Okupe Valley track to the lookout above the western cliffs which has a 198 metre drop down to the Western Marine Reserve. The Kapiti Marine Reserve is actually a nationally significant ecological and scientific resource as it contains some of the finest underwater scenery in the greater Wellington region.

Creating this image was all about asking questions of the past. Who were the people that once gathered here and why? Where were they going? Were they excited? Were they travelling alone or were they travelling as a group and when was it last used?

So this is me at the moment: I’m really enjoying exploring images that represent a place and time and hint at a human presence at the moment. Personally, I think that by capturing representations of human life that show the passing of time, it gives me a stronger inner connection to my own memories but it also allows me to connect and make sense of the world around me.

Hampden Crossing #4.

Hampden

Just before you get to the rise of the hill that leads into Hampden, there’s a flat horizon where the land meets the sea and the sea meets the sky. If you travel past in the dim half-light of the morning, there’s moment when the only interruption of the lands contours is two railway signs. In the dim, silence there’s a moment of isolation when if it wasn’t for the old railway signs and well worn tracks, you’d think you were the only person on earth.
